March break not a break from vigilance, says Guilbault

Deputy Premier Geneviève Guilbault reinforced the promise of increased police surveillance over the province’s March break on Wednesday morning.
“I invite our citizens to take advantage of this period to get some fresh air and have a good time, while respecting the health rules in place,” she said, pointing out that the week is not meant to be a break from vigilance.
Guilbault echoed the words of Premier Francois Legault on Tuesday evening, saying that police have been asked to increase their presence particularly in areas that rent cabins to prevent people from being tempted to break family bubbles.
The warning came at the same time as health officials released modeling for the Montreal area suggesting that new, more contagious variants of the COVID-19 virus could become dominant in that region within the coming weeks. The models are variable depending on the number of cases imported and how well the population follows public health guidelines.
The Province of Quebec recorded 800 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the total number of people infected to 278,987, with 9,313 active cases. There were 14 new deaths recorded, none of which had occurred in the previous day. The number of hospitalizations across the province decreased by five to 766, and the number of people in intensive care decreased by four to 130.
Quebec reported 1,714 doses of vaccine administered on Tuesday, for a total of 299,673 doses to date out of the 401,685 that have been received.
In the Eastern townships there were 26 new cases recorded for a total of 11,266 to date, 368 of which are still considered active. The number of deaths linked to the virus remained stable at 294, while the number of local hospitalizations decreased by five to 14. The number of people in intensive care in the region increased by one, however, to a total of three.
