Over the weekend the Union of Care Professionals of the Eastern Townships (FIQ-SPSCE) called on the local health authority to address the critical situation in several CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS facilities. Among others, the maternity ward, neonatology, emergency rooms, long-term care and operating rooms are at a breaking point due to the very serious shortage of care professionals. According to the union, those who are still in place are under enormous pressure to provide care despite their state of exhaustion. The multiplication of overtime, mandatory overtime and the incessant work overload no longer make it possible to offer the quality and safe care to which the region’s population is entitled, a press release said. They can no longer maintain the focus, attention and vigilance necessary to ensure safe care. Unperformed care and medication errors are on the rise.
