The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. The topic this week was: the municipal elections.
I have never paid much attention to municipal politics or elections. I can’t even really remember if I voted the last time around, which I guess means I probably didn’t vote.
It’s not a great look. I know. But honestly, I wish someone had told me earlier about the importance of municipal government. And I would guess many people feel the same way.
Municipal governments are meant to take care of the vitality of our communities, including transportation, education, and environmental issues. They’re with us at the ground level.
However, I would also guess that voter turnout for municipal elections pales in comparison to provincial and federal elections. And I think that stems from a lack of awareness and interest.
I’m obviously including myself in this group of people unaware of the need for honest and decent local governance. Let’s start with educating the youth.
