Just two days after Quebec’s institute of public health published a report stating that the Omicron variant is not currently spreading on a community scale in the province, the ministry of health and social services clarified that there are now five confirmed cases among travellers that have returned to Quebec, and another seven cases under investigation. Prior to Wednesday’s announcement there was only one known case within the province.
Quebec reported 1,367 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the total number of people infected to 458,426, with 11,140 active cases.
There were two new deaths, for a total of 11,596 since the start of the pandemic, and the number of hospitalizations province-wide increased to 242, with 59 in intensive care.
The regional healthcare establishment in the Eastern Townships reported 270 new cases over Monday and Tuesday, and there were 1,418 active cases as of Wednesday’s update.
The region also recorded 24 hospitalizations, ten of which were in intensive care. This accounted for more than half of all the hospitalizations off the island of Montreal.
The Sherbrooke region school service centre (CSSRS) announced the preventative closing of the Jardin-des-Lacs school in Saint-Denis de Brompton from Thursday through Monday due to a covid outbreak. According to the notice form the CSSRS, there were 30 cases spread across 10 out of 22 class groups in the school as of Wednesday, with a concentration of cases in the sixth grade. First-dose vaccination coverage for 5-11-year-olds in the Townships has reached 31.9 per cent, which is comparable with the 32 per cent coverage measured across the province. As of Wednesday, the ministry of Health had recorded 206,360 first doses among people aged 5 to 11 with 87,510 still awaiting their appointment.
