A group of roughly 60 student demonstrators gathered outside Richmond Regional High School last Thursday to voice their discontent with ongoing public health and safety measures.
The students lined the street leading to the school, carrying posters with slogans such as ‘the threat is the virus, not the people,’ and ‘freedom over fear,’ the latter of which also included a hand drawn Canadian flag. They also prompted passersby to honk and cheer in support.
“There were a lot of very positive reactions. There were people bringing us donuts and hot chocolate and there were people honking and supporting us and some people even pulled over and talked to us,” said Damian Roberts, one of the organizers of the student protest.
Roberts said they were congratulated for taking a stand. He told The Record that the mandates have led to a growing divide between vaccinated and unvaccinated students. Roberts and his fellow protesters want to have the right to choose whether or not to wear a mask in class.
