Héma-Québec, the province’s blood and human tissues service, reported on Wedensday that they have experienced an unusually high number of donation cancellations over the last several days.
According to a press release issued by the service, the number of people in Québec cancelling or not showing up for their appointment to give blood has doubled in recent days, with 800 fewer donations than anticipated in the week of March 28 alone.
“While it is normal to see some cancelled or missed appointments, this is the first time that the phenomenon has reached this level since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the statement reads, attributing the shortfall to the declaration of the sixth wave on March 30. Even as donations take a hit, however, the need for blood remains the same with 1,000 donations required per day to meet the needs of hospitals across Quebec.
