This year marks the sixth anniversary of the attack on the Quebec City Islamic cultural centre, where a gunman shot and killed six men who were attending evening prayers in the Mosque.
Mamadou Tanou Barry, Ibrahima Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Abdelkrim Hassane, Azzeddine Soufiane and Aboubaker Thabti lost their lives that night.
In 2021, the Government of Canada designated Jan. 29 as the “National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia.”
On Sunday afternoon, the Council of Muslim Associations of the Eastern Townships (CAME), in collaboration with several other organizations in the region, held an event at City Hall in Sherbrooke to mark the somber occasion.
The event started with a moment of silence for the victims, and was followed by speeches from community members and representatives from local organizations who spoke about racism, Islamaphobia and the importance of combating ignorance.
