Skiers descended on the Bromont Start Gate Rossignol ski store July 20 to meet celebrated Olympian Nancy Greene. The athlete, who won gold and silver ski medals in the 1968 Olympics, signed postcards and met with fans.
Now 80, Greene said she still skis about 120 days per year at her home of Sun Peaks, British Columbia. On holiday in the Townships, she said she’s been enjoying cycling, golfing and tennis.
Greene said she wasn’t surprised that the crowd at the event skewed older. “I can’t imagine kids lining up to meet somebody that’s 80,” she said. “Most of the young racers would rather meet Erik Guay and Geneviève Simard.”
One fan thrust a ski helmet into Greene’s arms for her to sign. She said she’s signed countless over the years. Some in the crowd were ski instructors, consulting one of Canada’s most famous skiers for tips on their craft.
For older skiers, Greene advised they “just don’t stop,” skiing. “Make sure you get good equipment, new equipment,” she added.
