Hakim Benfella, owner of Sherbrooke’s Marché Saveurs du Monde, took the spotlight on Nov. 22 as MP Élisabeth Brière chose his store to announce new holiday relief measures. Known for its wide selection of international and local products, the store has become a lifeline for families navigating tight budgets.
“This store reflects the heart of Sherbrooke,” said Brière. “It’s places like Hakim’s that bring communities together, especially during challenging times.”
Benfella, whose business serves a diverse clientele, said the announcement resonates deeply with his customers. “Families are trying to do more with less,” he noted. “Having support like this means they can enjoy the holidays without as much worry.”
The government measures, including a temporary GST exemption and a one-time $250 workers’ rebate, aim to reduce financial stress during the festive season and were first announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Nov. 21. While the announcement drew attention to the relief initiatives, it also underscored the role of local businesses like Benfella’s in supporting the community.
As the holidays approach, Benfella hopes his store will continue to be a hub for affordable, quality goods. “Shopping locally makes a difference—not just for businesses but for the entire community,” he said.
