The Bishop’s University Gaiters men’s basketball team is normally bagging groceries at the Provigo in Lennoxville this time of year, collecting donations for Alexander Galt High School’s annual Christmas basket campaign.
However, as the pandemic forced the Eastern Townships into a red zone, limiting the amount of people allowed inside the grocery store, the team wanted to find another way to support local families in need during the holiday season.
James Murray, a second year guard for the Gaiters, told The Record there was no way he would skip on the tradition. The 25-year-old is born and raised in Stanstead, so the campaign holds a special place in his heart.
“It wasn’t really a question of whether I wanted to or not, it’s almost like a responsibility just to give back as much as I can to a community that’s honestly like a great community overall,” said Murray.
The Gaiters have raised $7,500 since university alumni Charles Kobelt started the initiative in 2009. According to Murray, the plan moving forward is to make the team’s contribution bigger and better every year. The men’s team aims to raise $2,000 by the end of the month.
