The Champlain Cougars women’s ice hockey team are one win away from booking a spot in the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) hockey collégial féminin D1 championship.
The Cougars defeated Limoilou 3-2 on Saturday to take a one-game lead in the best-of-three semi-final series. The winner of this playoff series will face John Abbott, a perennial favourite, in the championship round, as the Islanders swept Andre-Laurendeau over the weekend.
Champlain went up 1-0 late in the first period thanks to a power play goal from Catherine Proulx. Naomi Morin doubled the Cougars’ lead early in the second period, and Mégane Beaudoin’s early marker in the third period eventually held up as the game winning goal.
Limoilou, who finished in second place in the regular season, ahead of Champlain, posted two power play goals in the game. According to Cougars head coach David Evangelho, although it was high intensity for 60 minutes, his squad was up for the challenge against a season rival.
