Several local churches participated in the annual tradition of ringing their bells for Earth Day on Sunday. According to UUEstrie, the Unitarian Universalist community based in North Hatley, the tradition is both a celebration and a warning of the impact modern life is having on the environment. This year that community aimed to ring its bell 410 times in a row to mark the current level of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere (410 parts per million), although after 360 rings by 35 participants the bell’s rope fell off. Seen here are the bell ringers at UUEstrie in 2017.
