Students at New Horizons Adult Education Centre were putting the finishing touches on a mural project in their student lounge on Monday morning. Coordinated by Jessica Girard and Courtney Nichols of Joblinks, the project brought together close to thirty students over the course of three weeks for a series of workshops focused on self-expression, helped by local artist Trevor Mckinven.
According to Girard, all of the students at the centre were invited to register for the three workshops that led up to the creation of the mural, and participation ranged between four and thirteen, depending on the group. Some of the centres’ staff also joined in. Participants were encouraged to consider aspects of personal motivation and identity in planning their part of the final project, and were supported in techniques and methods by McKinven.
The result is a collective artwork in a student gathering space that highlights the diversities of identity, culture, and expression that exist within the centre that will last for years to come.
