A fundraising campaign is underway to create a mural for the front of Lennoxville Elementary School (LES). Facing Academy Street, the mural will serve as a colourful welcome for people heading into town on Queen Street, and also combine the history of education, Lennoxville and the school.
LES Principal Dawn Irving and teacher Sigal Gandey had been discussing the possibility of making use of the big red wall at the front of the school since last year.
“Then Covid hit, so we kind of put the brakes on the project,” Irving said.
With the situation improving, they decided it was time to move forward with the mural, so they enlisted the help of Raphaelle Coulombe-Allie, a former M.U.R.I.R. co-manager and experienced muralist. Gandey and Irving started working on ideas and sending them to Coulombe-Allie.
“We wanted it to take the direction of the history of the school in the context of the history of the town,” Gandey said. “When we were starting out, we were just sending a bunch of objects,” Irving added.
