“Honest to goodness, it started because I had a dream that I worked in a Santé globale school,” Sherbrooke Elementary School (SES) phys ed teacher, Marc Ghilarducci admits. “This was about four years ago, maybe five.”
Ghilarducci had researched the program after seeing logos on the side of other schools, and was inspired by its focus on increasing physical education periods in schools, particularly outdoor activities that are more accessible and less costly for families. The classical principle of a healthy mind in a healthy body is its ethos.
“There’s a huge outdoor component to it,” Ghilarducci explains. “The whole premise of the program is to get them to be healthy human beings, and sustain that healthiness. So that, as they get older, they can still do these activities.”
Waking from that dream, Ghilarducci took the proposal to Sherbrooke Elementary School principal, Nicole Carrière, who offered full support. “We wanted to be the first English school to belong to this program, so we made it happen.”
