Bishop’s University will hold its second annual Virtual Gaiter Classic golf tournament on Friday, June 18, due to the ongoing pandemic and Quebec’s health and safety measures.
Marty Rourke, the BU Gaiters golf coach and sports information coordinator, told The Record that people can participate in the event from any golf course. Participants are asked to send in photos of themselves playing golf, which will then be posted on social media.
“Usually, it’s a pretty big production where we like to try to get somewhere between 120 and 140 golfers together and do the whole on-course stuff, and have a nice presentation and dinner after, but you know, Covid decided that can’t happen,” said Rourke.
Last year, the university was forced to move the tournament to a virtual format for the first time in its history. While golf is one of several acceptable sports in the province, where people can maintain a physical distance, they opted to keep it virtual again this summer.
