Veterans park for free in Sherbrooke

On 4 December 2017, Mister Robert Groulx, President of the Veterans Committee of Unit 318 of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada made a presentation before the Sherbrooke Municipal Council requesting that all Veterans owning a vehicle with a licence plate adorned with a poppy be exempt of paying parking fees at parking meters within the city of Sherbrooke.
On 18 December 2017, this request was unanimously accepted by the Municipal Council who voted also that free parking be granted to all handicapped drivers. To be eligible, Veterans and handicapped drivers will have to apply for the sticker via the city web site (sherbrooke.b-citi.com).
Those who already own a licence plate adorned with a poppy have to fill in a request for their sticker through the city web site and their sticker will be sent by mail. Those who don’t have a licence plate adorned with a poppy have to order their licence with the Royal Canadian Legion, Quebec Provincial Command. To do so, you go to the Royal Canadian Legion, Quebec Provincial Command website. Once on the site, click on Licence on top of the page; a window will open and click on Veteran’s licence plate; follow the instructions to fill in the Application for Veteran’s Licence Plate.
When the Legion receives your complete application, they will do the necessary verifications and will send it to your regional Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ). After that, the SAAQ will send you a new registration certificate for your vehicle and your new licence plate with embossed poppy. Once you receive your new licence plate and registration certificate, you can apply for your free sticker through the city of Sherbrooke web site (sherbrooke.b-citi.com). The sticker is valid for the life of your vehicle and will be sent to you by mail. If you encounter any problems during the process, you can call Comrade Guy Marchessault at 819-823-1330.
